I was looking for a film called Kika and did a title search as usual, but the weirdest thing happened: Instead of giving me a list of possible film titles to choose from, it opened this page http://www.rarefilmfinder.com/showfilm.php?id=20657

Alternative title for the movie you opened is La superbruja Kika (Spain). What's strange?

"Superbruja" in Spanish means "super-witch".

Ok, I did not know that (and it's also the wrong film), but I still would have thought that when there is no exact match then I should get a list of potential films, rather than just one automated selection.... especially when it's the wrong selection

Maybe it would be a good idea for that Spanish title to be added to the page for that movie as yet another a.k.a. title.

But this is exactly how it should work. IMDb search works the same way. Learn it and you will understand.

Only when there's an exact title match, or just one film is a possible result.
Maybe the real Kika film just isn't on here at all, but that's not really the point here
