A stray dog was born on the street and learned to survive there: steal sausages, warm himself in doorways and make friends. One day, while fleeing from an evil saleswoman, he falls into a deep hole and cannot get out. He is saved by Mikhail, an elderly and lonely man with whom his family does not really want to communicate. He saves him and gives him a name - Styopka. It would seem that Mikhail and Styopka found each other so as not to be lonely, but when Mikhail brings the dog home, he feels bad. Михаил — бывший конструктор самолетов, а ныне просто дедушка, который постоянно попадает в нелепые ситуации. Однажды 31 декабря они с внуком Сережей приютили пса, который прятался от новогодних салютов. Псу дали имя Степка. Вскоре после того, как внука забрали родители, Михаилу становится плохо.
