Liu Shuang'er, a female soldier in the Red Army, was being hunted down by White bandits when she had a chance encounter with Zhen Meizi, the daughter of a hunter who was evading capture by a local warlord. The two swore a bond of life and death. Liu Shuang'er was then cleverly rescued by Qin Shaowu, the son of the lord of Pan Shi Fort, who was on his way to a wedding. Zhen Meizi was rescued from the execution ground by Zhe Ban Tian, a bandit from Black Wind Cave, and taken back to the mountain stronghold. Left isolated and helpless, she had no choice but to pretend to be the chief's wife. Later, with the mediation of New Fourth Army officers Song Yan and Ling Feng, set aside their differences and joined forces against external enemies. However, Major Zhan Xiong of the Military Intelligence Bureau subsequently persuaded Pan Shi Fort and Black Wind Cave to integrate into the Nationalist Army. Zhe Ban Tian compromised behind Zhen Meizi's back, and the Black Wind Cave bandits were thus transformed into a Nationalist Army unit. Zhen Meizi, too, underwent a metamorphosis from a former 'mountain bandit' into a Nationalist Army officer, drifting further and further apart from Liu Shuang'er.
