On Christmas Eve 1815, Count Hubert and Countess Sabine were bored in their remote Quercy castle, watching the fire die down in the fireplace. At their feet, their dog longed for the days when his master still took him hunting. Their daughter, Mathilde, was destined for an excellent marriage. The Countess, however, was sad. She fondly remembered the night she had spent, just a year earlier, with a young cavalier, Captain de Saint-Alban, while her husband was in Paris accompanying Mathilde on her debut into society.
