Ten-year-old Alva doesn't like makeup and doesn't care about her hair. Unlike her older sister Hannah, who spends all day lounging on the couch with her friends, she prefers to be outside with them. Alva is the wildest kid of them all—and finds it all the more ridiculous that the neighborhood boys seem to treat her differently than the other children: Why is it suddenly so important whether you're a boy or a girl?
