In 1945, Japan's defeat seemed imminent. Major cities like Tokyo and Osaka were almost completely devastated by American air raids. The protagonist, Mutsuko, lost her father in the war, her mother and younger brother in the Great Yokohama Air Raid that year, and became an orphan. She searched for her aunt and uncle in Oita, far away in Kyushu, but they too perished in the air raids. Her reunion with her only cousin was short-lived, however, as Mutsuko, afflicted with tuberculosis, was ostracized.
