Jan De Ruyter is a Dutch strict, law-abiding IND (Dutch Immigration Authorities in The Hague) officer. He works and lives in Amsterdam. In his private life, he is a loving, caring father and a brilliant musician. The life of Mahmoud, a 17-year old immigrant who is about to be deported is in Jan's hands. He turns a blind eye to the horrible consequences of deporting him, trying to rule according to protocol, and plays his music as he tries to escape his guilty conscience.
