The Man, of uncertain birth, digs his own grave, fills it with water and cement, and—in the final scene—throws himself in. Three days earlier, he had encountered the Little Girl by deceiving her by leading her along the river, causing her to fall and die. The police investigate him and simultaneously arrest the uncle responsible for previous abuse of his niece.
