September 8, 1866, Rózsahegy. The Szendrey family gathers at their father's house to celebrate Mary's Day. Ignác Szendrey, the father, wants to ease Julia's situation a little by separating her from the children and her husband, Árpád Horváth, whom the whole family considers unworthy of Julia. István Petőfi soon arrives, announcing that he will no longer take responsibility for the dissolute, sick son, Zoltán Petőfi. István still loves Marika, Julia's sister. The repressed emotions in the family can no longer be contained, but none of them suspect the real tragedy.
