When he comes to visit the child, everyone decides that he was the father - and kicks him out. Mitya decides to drown himself. Unknown saves him and helps to stage his own funeral. Разоблачение нравов провинциального мещанства. Годы нэпа. Маленький городок. Отзывчивый Митя, идя на вечеринку к своей невесте Шурочке, находит умирающую женщину с грудным ребенкм. Когда он пришел с ребенком в гости, все решили, что он отец - и выгнали его. Митя решил утопиться. Неизвестный спас его и помог инсценировать собственные похороны. Во время траурной церемонии Митя поднялся из гроба, поблагодарил окаменевших от ужаса обывателей и навсегда уехал из города.
