Review:

The two main characters, Angela (Miranda Stuart Ryne) and her six-year old sister, Ellie (Charlotte Blythe), have just moved into a new upstate New York home. Their mother, Mae (Anna Thompson), a manic-depressive ex-singer, has an erratic relationship with her two daughters and her husband, Andrew (John Ventimiglia). Sometimes, she's sweet and joyful; on other occasions, she's violent and self-destructive. Angela doesn't understand her mother, but she's sure that her own sin and spiritual inadequacies are somehow responsible for Mae's problems, so, with Ellie in tow, she runs away from home, following obscure "signs from God" in a quest to purify herself, and, as a result, save her mother.

I found this movie interesting, but at the same time somewhat chaotic and incoherent. The mother is manic-depressive which obviously disrupts the stability of the family. The two young girls don't know how to deal with the situation, so the seek an escape through fantasy. They seem to think that if they can cleanse themselves of sin, their mother will get well. But the results lead to an unexpected conclusion. Contrary to what some critics have said, I thought Charlotte Blythe gave an exceptional performance. She was my favorite of the two girls.

I watch this film any chance I get. Despite the low budget, and often inept production ( you can see the sound booms in several scenes ) you can tell this is meant as an indepth look into the pre-adolescent mind. Absoltely everything is seen from the perspective of Angela. No spoilers here, but you are not going to guess how it ends. Every time I watch this, I get a deeper appreciation of the film.
