After a fire in orphanage the administration of a nearby sanatorium for old and protractedly ill people decides to take care about a few young girls. One of them, 7-year-old Mary, tries to make friends with Adam - a man facing the end of his life. Although children's appearance changes the atmosphere in the house, Adam resistes this, in his opinion, infantile euphoria. He withdraws even more, not wanting to bind the girl to himself when his days are counted.
