Над Тихим океаном терпит крушение английский самолет. Выжить удается лишь группе школьников. Мальчики оказываются на необитаемом острове и вынуждены самостоятельно организовывать свой быт. На роль лидеров претендуют два подростка: рассудительный и смелый Ральф и староста церковного хора Джек. Ральф предлагает построить шалаши и устроить костер на вершине горы, чтобы попытаться привлечь внимание и дождаться помощи. А Джек организует племя охотников и вступает в открытую конфронтацию с Ральфом, которого выбрали лидером в ходе голосования. Это противостояние приводит к печальным последствиям.
