Very little is known about Caligula, other than Suetonius’ brief account of him in ‘The Twelve Caesars’. But isn’t it about time someone made a substantially interesting film about him and the Roman culture in general of that period?

With what we do know about him; and with a bit of sensible and constrained imagination, the world of Ancient Rome and its fascinating cultures would make a refreshing change, and especially to what has become an otherwise bland modern-day excuse to appeal to those who don’t have the imagination to relish something different.

The Western World would not have the courage to make such a film, or they would probably make a mess of it: the Asians would delete most of the scenes before they had even made them; which only leaves the intelligent, sensible and rational film-making countries in Europe, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia or Russia.

If such a film has already been made about Caligula: and one that has not been mindlessly mutilated by the sad, pathetic film censors that destroy any worthy film buff’s appreciation of the cinematographic world, then perhaps it could be mentioned on this Forum.

As an enthusiast of World Cinema, I thought I would follow RareFilmFinder for a while before actually joining, and having done so, I decided to reply to your interesting post about Caligula. To some he was a loveable rogue, but to others he was a scoundrel, and because of this I doubt if a film could ever be made about him, revealing the truth behind the scandalous rumours and known facts. There were far worse than him of course, but in terms of what RareFilmFinder is partially about, he fits in nicely with that scheme of things. I think the nearest they ever got to this was the TV series, I Claudius, which my youngest son used to call ‘I Clav Divs’.
Good luck with your posts, for it seems that you are a rare breed in terms of making good use of this site. I have also responded to your other post on love and affection, so have a look at that.

Thank you, Cognocenti. Very good of you to make such a positive reply to my 'Caligula' post. I remember 'I CLaudius', but felt that it was a bit wooden at the time. I couldn't fault the actors, of course, and Derek Jacobi certainly stood out as a true Roman Citizen.

There was a film made starring Malcolm McDowell as the emperor. If you're lucky enough to get the uncut version (it's commercially available) then it's worthwhile, though it's mostly just adult porn.
