On New Year's Eve, a chance encounter brings a strange little girl to the home of a young Riga lawyer. Stasja's appearance causes a lot of trouble in Eriks' life. Everyone is annoyed by her unlikely stories and categorical judgments. Eriks quarrels with his fiancée because of Stasja, and the New Year's celebration with friends falls apart. However, the friendship born between an adult and a child turns out to be stronger than all misunderstandings, and Eriks finally learns the real reason that brought the girl to the city. Her trust awakens in Eriks a sense of duty towards the little person who has come face to face with the sad side of life so early. At first, the "strange incident" becomes close and personal to the film's hero.
