Nakai Kiichi plays Daikichi, who in 1945 paints designs on wooden sandals to support his pregnant wife Kimie (Ishida Yuriko) and their four children in Hiroshima. He grows wheat to keep his family fed during the lean war years. He is also resolutely against the war and is arrested by the public security police for being "unpatriotic."

![]() A must see for anyone with a thought of how WMDs as they are now called are used. The destruction of a city and 140,000 people in the flash of an atomic bomb. Ren Kobayashi outperforms his Hollywood contemporaries with an amazing range of acting throughout. He shifts from comedy to tragedy, hope and despair throughout the equivalent of two average Hollywood presentations. It's a credit to the writing, direction and the youngsters in the cast that even if you don't undertand a word the message is clear. There is no bias in the view of the Japanese military whose brutality to their own seems to reflect the memoirs of Allied POWs and the brutality they encountered. As the clock ticks to the inevitable moment you hold your breath as life continues. Don't watch the trailers, but do buy the DVD. Fuji TV should make a dubbed or at least English release as soon as possible. Rating: 9/10 |
